Diabetics at Jamba Juice:

Eating good food at the right time can control your blood sugar, also stop you from craving wrong sort of food. Jamba Juice offers drinks in three separate sizes: 16, 24, and 32-ounce. You can choose the lowest serving size and cut down on sugars and calorie intake. If you're diabetic and concerned about the sugar intake, then you can opt for the smaller 9.5-ounce smoothies available for kids at Jamba Juice.

Foods to Avoid at Jamba Juice for Diabetics:

Jamba Juice is primarily known for its highly satisfying and nutritive smoothies and juices. Almost every smoothie and juice item on the Jamba Juice menu contains sugar. Diabetics are recommended to opt for smaller serving size while ordering at Jamba Juice. Also, avoid opting for creamy treats as all the smoothies offered in this category contain a load of sugars.

Keep the sugar content below 50g per meal at Jamba Juice and ensure that you don't follow it with a heavy meal. A small size regular smoothie is equivalent to a meal for everyone. Classic smoothies at Jamba Juice are also heavily loaded with sugars. Stay away from that section if you are a diabetic.

I had never heard of this place, and I'm not sure why, it was fabulous. The bread, pita, and whipped garlic butter were fantastic. I can say that the crawfish, zuchini, and spinach bisque is the best bisque I have ever had. I will be going back for to-go orders for this soup. Maybe I can convince them to sell me a gallon, it's that good. I got the veggie couscous for dinner. The couscous was fluffy and the veggies were flavorful and well cooked. For dessert I was going to split the date-stuffed cake and the tiramisu with my dinner partner, but the owner heard us considering the tiramisu so he brought us all 3 without charging for the tiramisu! The star was the baklava, which is made with almonds. It was exceptional. They then brought us mint tea, a cute after-dinner addition. As we left we were sprinkled with orange blossom water on our hands, which smelled wonderful. This place was super cozy, I would bring a date here. The food was great, the service was exceptional, and I'll be going back.

Jamila's is a magical experience that I will be bringing every out of towner that comes through my door to, regardless of their personalities (I often tailor my suggestions to the people I have with me). The owners are a husband and wife duo who fell in love via being penpals (precious I know) and they are some of the most genuinely kind and nice people I know. In a southern city known for hospitality, and this is written by a southern woman, this should stand out. The food is nothing short of phenomenal, but you cannot go in expecting a New Orleans culinary experience; rather, a Tunisian one. By this I mean, don't expect for the chef to have taken a basic dish and interpreted it in some weird crazy exciting way and then added the latest fad in gourmet to it (e.g. seafood dish plus new orleans spices plus truffle oil, almond butter, and salt from himalayan mountains mined by local goats). Instead, you get a traditional culinary meal that like Julia Child would swoon over. My boyfriend had the lamb which was great. Excellent rice. Best rice ever actually. I had pasta. Not just any pasta. Pasta that still makes my mouth water to this day. (Now, that's particularly hard to do because I grew up having my Sicilian Uncle cook me pasta with homemade red sauce on a whim. So I know what I am talkin about.) No, my pasta was a daily special. It had mussels and shrimp in it with fresh tomatoes and herbs that were probably grown on site they were so fresh. This could've been my last meal and I would've been thrilled. Jamila's has an extensive wine list. Our waiter and I spoke a smattering of french and arabic and english together; he inquired about my life, and my friends' lives. Furthermore, he froze my friend's favorite meal because he recently has moved to Nashville and obviously cannot get Jamila's cooking in Nashville, but of course Jamila and her husband wanted my friend to be able to enjoy their food in Nashville. How awesome is that!?!?! Other happy notes: delicious turkish coffee, to die for mousses, amazing Brik au Crevettes (homemade baklava with shrimp in it), amazing mint tea. Our tab was around 66 dollars for lamb, my aforementioned pasta, brik au crevettes, colombian coffee times 2, 2 mousse dishes, and mint tea. Very inexpensive for the quality. Oh and the owner brings around rose-water which he puts on your hands after your meal. Pretty much the culmination of a PERFECT experience. notes: Jamila's is not pronounced juh-meal-a. It is jah-MEE-laa. Also, in case you couldn't tell, I cannot be emphatic enough when I say that it is incredible.

Jamila's environment is charming and the food is fantastic. The host is so kind and shows wonderful hospitality. I second what all the other Yelpers are saying- definitely get the crawfish bisque... Do try the mint tea, and enjoy the eclectic but warm and wonderful atmosphere of Jamilas!

This is one of the best places in the city. Almost no one knows about it. The owner looks like Mario from the video games and I've heard him speak three languages in the span of one meal. He ALWAYS takes care of you and will come and talk with you and is really the epitome of hospitable. The food is very good and the restaurant itself is freaking great in its tiny location. I've never been disappointed. I consider this to be on par with Jaqu-imo's, except without the crowd. This place rules.

Delicious! Everything we ate at the restaurant was amazing. We first got warm bread and pita with a heavenly herb butter. Our lamb and couscous was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Very pleased with the restaurant! Moncef gave us very good recommendations as what to eat since none of my party had Tunisian food before. He even wrote a list for us for New Orleans tourist attractions. Moncef and Jamila were really nice and they even let me into the kitchen! It was so clean and organized. I was amazed by their kindness and excellent service! Highly recommended.

The people here are lovely. They make you feel at home. And the atmosphere is very cozy. But honestly, I was not a big fan of the food. I think it was just ok. And very over priced. My fav part of the meal were those breads with Mediterranean butter that they served in the beginning. Everything else did not impress me. And we specially went coz we heard they had belly dance over weekends. I and my husband had been to an amazing belly dance restaurant in Chicago, and this was nothing compared to it. The belly dancer looked like she was not trained and was just dancing for the heck of it. Not impressed!

  • Alana W.

Moncef's excellent service and Jamila's delicious food could warrant five stars alone, but the story behind their founding the restaurant is truly out of a film. The mint tea, salmon entree, Mediterranean shrimp, tuna appetizer, and baklava were all amazing! Jamila's Cafe has absolutely replaced my favorite dinner restaurant.

This is a one of a kind special restaurant !! Can not say enough about it. The crawfish soup was amazing, lamb chops, lamb sausage & every thing lamb is the very best. Very personal service even though it was crowded at the time. The smells are great from the time you enter the place. Lively & great fun. Can not wait to go again.

Finding myself hungry and outside my neighborhood on a Sunday night, Yelp's monocle app popped up with Jamila's -- OPEN -- 4+ stars -- not too many dollar signs. But that hardly tells the whole story.... M. Moncef is the marketing department, front of the house, deal-maker, maitre d' and wait staff, combined into one genial and gracious person, whose thoughtful service will often culminate in a charming and completely unaffected "voila." Mme. Jamila is the brains in the kitchen, who impressed us on our first visit to her eponymous restaurant with a terrifically flavorful spinach/zuchini/crawfish bisque, house-made lamb merguez (is that saffron in there?), and a cumin-rubbed grilled amberjack filet finished with a roast-red pepper/tomato/garlic/caper chutney. A good meal should make you happy, and we left Jamila's with smiles, making plans for our next visit.

I adore Jamilia's. It's one of the places I acutely miss, not living in New Orleans any longer. The food is wonderful and really highlights the versatility and diversity of Tunisian cuisine, but it also feeds the soul. This is comfort food, due to it being cooked by a woman who knows her food inside and out and wants to make you happy. Moncef is genial and engaging. He, with his wife, just want to make sure you are fed well and are happy. Over the 5 years I lived here, I ended up here often enough to get to know them and their family, because I ate there so often. And now whenever I go back I get a glass of wine and chat with Moncef as he's doing what he does best- taking care of people. The mussels are divine and the lamb tajine is killer. The crawfish bisque is addictive- I have a friend who has them pack up 3 liters whenever she visits, so she can freeze them and take them home on the plane. It's that good. You can't go wrong with a bit of the darkest coffee you'll ever have in your life, or some mint tea. Go, eat well. Try something you wouldn't think of- I promise it's amazing. I've brought everyone I know here, including a group of chef friends from New York who swooned. Never has anyone had a bad experience and always do they walk away full and happy.

I agree with the other reviewers on the hospitality. Great service, especially compared to places around Canal Street in downtown. Nice manager, chill, small, not too dark. The bread and homemade garlic butter will stay with me forever. It's served in a ramekin and has garlic. If you don't like garlic or salt, don't come here. If you want quality food and service away from crowds go here. Docked a star because it's sorta out in the boonies and a little pricey for the amount of food you get.

  • Allison R.

A little pricey for what you get but there's a great experience along with it. The owner will sit and talk and tell you all about the Mediterranean and Tunisia. The food is delicious.

What a lovely, homey restaurant. I'm a lucky gal to have local friends who will share places like this with me -- if I were them, I'd want to keep this restaurant to myself. Where to start? Jamila's is owned by Jamila and Moncef Sbaa, and they do it all themselves -- they are the cook(s), dishwasher(s), busboy(s), waiter(s), greeter(s) and everything else, too. It was a pleasure to meet them; like being welcomed into someone's home to have dinner. Everything I had there was delicious, starting with two types of bread with garlic and chive butter, a delicious shrimp-and-potatoes-in-phyllo-pastry appetizer (called brik aux crevettes,) an excellent and fresh salad, and a nicely spicy main dish of pasta with lots of fresh veggies. My companions both had different forms of lamb with couscous and said both dishes were exceptional. We each tried a different dessert, (the tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and creme brulee), all of which were fabulous, and had sweet mint tea to finish it off. An incredibly pleasant, personal place to dine. I'd be there every week if I lived in New Orleans -- as it is I'll be back ASAP.

The best food I tried in NOLA, the entries were awesome, the desert was so good and so did the white wine! I'll never forgot the mine tea!

I loved Jamilla's! My boyfriend and I had a late dinner here while we were visiting NOLA and had a fantastic experience. We chose this restaurant because it was walking-distance from where we were staying; we had no expectation that the food would be as good as it is. My boyfriend had a seafood pasta dish that was on the specials list and I had the carrot and tuna salad. The salad was very well-spiced and delicious, and exactly what one needs after eating po'boys and beignets for 3 days straight. My boyfriend's pasta was excellent, it had a delicate hint of saffron that was so delicious with the fresh seafood and cream sauce. There were two things that really blew both of us out of the water: 1) the spinach-crawfish bisque, which we each had a cup of. THAT is a fabulous soup! It's rich and creamy, sort of like a lobster bisque. It's incredible. And 2) the energy of the host. Right when we walked in he greeted us with such genuine warmth, we couldn't help but smile. I'd give Jamilla's 5 stars for taste and enjoyment. I would definitely return for a big bowl of the crawfish bisque.

I loved this place. Went on a Wednesday night and it was quiet. We were greeted by co-owner Moncef. He is very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. The bread and garlic butter is divine. Try the pita even if you think you'd rather have the bread. They are both fab. The food was very simple and good. Butter and parsley sauces. Fresh seafood. Pleasant atmosphere. I would definitely return.

The reviews below are accurate. This is a special place - small, intimate and romantic, but what makes it most special is the family that runs the place. This is real food, by real people - you will meet the owner, the chef, probably one of their children, and you will be able to taste the love in their food.

My husband and I went here for a date night. We chose this because of the Yelp reviews, I am so glad we did! I have to have food without any flames touching the food and the owners Moncef & Jamila were so personable and very accommodating. The food was great! This is a very clean, quaint, flavorful restaurant! What a great find, we will be back!

Moncef makes this restaurant the best service & his wife's food is off-the-hook! The warm pita bread with the herb butter was completely addicting. I had fantastic seafood with vegetables. The atmosphere is very simple. Nice restaurant to eat outside when it's warm. But the people really make this a stand-out restaurant.

This place really is a gem. Hidden in the Black Pearl neighborhood, it's been around for years but nobody has heard of it. And I realized that I had driven by it several times over the years and never noticed. It's that incognito. But once you walk in it's like you're not even in New Orleans anymore! I came on a Saturday night. The ever present Moncef was our waiter. He is also the owner, the other half being Jamila, his wife, who cooks everything. The service is so warm and accommodating. They placed us in a table at the back and later when a table at the front opened up they moved us closer to the window, without us even asking. Very gracious. And he encouraged us to take our time and dine slowly, which I love! Too many places these days just want to turn the tables. We stayed for over 3 hours. Ok the food! They brought us warm bread and pita with a house made butter of chives, garlic, parsley, and other delicious things. I think I ate my weight in butter (Pro? Con? There's endless bread and butter). They had an number of delicious looking specials, but I ordered the lamb chops with potatoes and asparagus. My friends got the couscous with lamb and a lamb tagine dish. Both were stewy and delicious. And they always put Harissa hot sauce on the table! Yum. Dessert was house made baklava and tiramisu. I've had better of both but then they served this lovely mint tea and, post-dinner Moncef came and sprinkled our hands with this orange blossom water. It smelled so good and we all swore our hands felt softer! Bellydancing starts at 8:00 on Saturday! She even gave us a lesson in the middle of dinner. By the next hour everyone was on the floor dancing, working off that lamb and baklava. This place would be great on a date or with a big group. Definitely coming back!

I always loved getting the crawfish bisque and merguez at Jazzfest, but going to Jamillas was a whole different ball game. Monsef is such a great host, he really makes you feel welcome and is a joy to chat with. The food was all excellent, the escargot were terrific and the bisque is always good. Be prepared to spend a couple hours for dinner, the pace is slow but it's nice way to enjoy good company. The lamb tagine was good too, make sure to ask for some Harissa, a special hot sauce, to go along with it.

Excellent experience. We walked in on a Saturday night and were warmly greated and served. Since this was a first time we asked Moncref for suggestions and all were very tasty. The bisque was outstanding and the eggplant salad was fresh and deliciously seasoned. Only complaint was the creme brûlée crust was slightly overdone. Highly recommended.

One of the warmest restaurants I've ever visited. The food was on point and you couldn't ask for better service. You felt very welcome. I really appreciated their heart for kids as they made something off menu for my daughter who's a picky eater. Thank you for a great dining experience.

Before starting the review of the restaurant and the food I have to shout out to YELP in general and to Shannon S. in particular. Yelp is just the bees' knees in finding new places and learning whether they are worth a look see. And the members of YELP go the extra mile to assist you in passing a grand time in the Crescent City. When Shannon learned we were moving to a new area of Uptown New Orleans he was right on the mark with places to visit. There are many on the list and this will be my report on one of them. Jamila's Café is located on Maple St. a few blocks off South Carrollton Ave. in a very active part of town for restaurants and bars. It is what I would call a neighborhood type of place with different sitting areas and set up in such a way that conversation with your dinner guest is never difficult because of noise. Another major plus outside of the delicious food served here is that we were treated as regulars on our first visit. My kind of place! The owner visited our table throughout the night and even opened our wine. After dinner we were escorted to the kitchen to meet the staff and his wife and namesake Jamila. They made us feel like long time regulars and that was appreciated. The food is not typical New Orleans of course. Jamila's promotes itself as a Tunisian Mediterranean restaurant. And the difference is welcomed and appreciated when you desire good food with an enjoyable new taste and flavor. After being seated, and reservations are accepted, we began to take in the aroma, sights and sounds of the restaurant. Our server was Karim and he was most attentive. Our cocktails, Grey Goose and Maker's Mark over ice, were delivered with a full glass pour. That made be happy before the first taste of food. We started with two appetizers: The Steamed Mussel Marienieres and the Brik aux Crevettes. The Mussels were fantastic and one of the best dishes we enjoyed on our first visit. The Brik aux Crevettes in a dough were nice but overshadowed by the Mussels. The wine list is varied and reasonable. We ordered and enjoyed a Pouilly- Fuissé. One thing stood out here in the serving of the wine. This has never been done in my history of drinking wine in any restaurant in my life. The owner did the honors of opening the bottle for us. And as is the custom to pour a little wine in the glass and wait to see if it is acceptable Moncef poured a little wine into both our glasses. Equality has come to the tasting of wine before a meal at Jamila's. It was nice and both my fiancée and I highly appreciated this procedure. The Mussels were so good that Bethany ordered a main course that contained shrimp and more mussels. Served over linguine pasta it was more than she could handle and I was able to do my duty and finish it for her along with my delicious selection. My choice was the Mediterranean Shrimp that was sautéed in garlic, white wine, and prepared with sundried tomatoes and spinach over linguine pasta also. Servings are a nice size and we left stuffed. And that was after a Jamila's pastry and some very good strong coffee the way coffee was created to be served.

So delicious! A coworker of mine suggested we go to this restaurant while we were in New Orleans for work. We were staying by the French Quarter and Jamila's is just a short cab ride away. Completely worth the trip over. The food is delicious and personalized service is great. Moncief, the owner, is a gem! I highly recommend their crawfish bisque. I could eat it every day.

Service is Amazing! The owner waits on every table as if we were visiting his own home. The food is delicious! Belly dancer was spectacular. I will recommend this place to Everyone! Lamb is very tender and even my friends that typically do not like lamb, loved the lamb here.

Pros... Family owned and operated so the food is amazing!! The restaurant is small but they don't cram tables in which is a nice change. The staff are extremely friendly and even stayed open well past the listed time for our table to order dessert and chitchat. Will absolutely return. Cons... Okay one thing that is not necessarily a con I just wish I knew it earlier is that there is a belly dancer on Saturday nights. This was not expected so it was extremely awkward for us. As I mentioned this is a SMALL restaurant so she was pretty damn close to the tables making it just plain strange to eat a meal and talk. The food and service made up for this and I will be back... Just not on a Saturday night!!

Going to Jamila's is always a treat! I can never understand why the place is mostly empty, because the food is not only authentic and perfectly prepared ... you can even taste the love. The wacky husband-and-wife proprietors make for an entertaining (if a tad overly loquacious) duo. If you're the type to become mortified by a convivial, jovial, overly friendly waiter, do whatever you gotta do to chill before entering. Because he WILL be gabbing at you throughout the meal, à la "This is how we do things in my country." If you compliment the food or inquire about ingredients, he may even trot out his obliging, beleaguered wifey chef to your table. Embrace the gesture. The house-baked bread and herbed butter are a heavenly pre-meal offering. I could gush over the entire menu -- the soups are superb, even the wine selection is better than decent -- but will simply close with, "Set your tastebuds for fun!" A tad pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for, attentive service along with the kind of quaint, charming ambiance that will invite you back for every date night.

I'm not sure what I can add that would be different from the other reviews, We had a great time the food is amazing the flavors were just fantastic! The service by far has got to be on my top 10 list! Very attentive and friendly, after dinner we all moved out to the patio for coffee and desert and they just went out of their was to accommodate our every need and we didn't ask for anything, they turned a random night out for dinner with friends to a special event! I highly recommend dinner at Jamila's

The only reason I would go back to this place is the most hospitable owner I ve seen. Food was reasonable .. Would give 3 stars but will go with a 4 star final rating given the 5 star ambience and service.

Monsieur Moncef gives this place such soul. From reading the other reviews, I gather that he is always as pleasant and charming as he was the other night, and that his wife is the mastermind in the kitchen. What a heartwarming team. As another reviewer said, this restaurant's food and ambiance is absolutely on par with other top restaurants in New Orleans, but the service is what pushes it over the top. Moncef is amazing - never too in your face, but always there when you need him. He's chatty and funny, and we spent about five minutes shouting French phrases to each other in silly voices (I was sitting outside, and he even began to go inside, then would pop his head out the door again for another "BON APPETIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTT"). I haven't been here since 2008, but the other night I came here with a friend for a light and late dinner. I will definitely try to bring my parents here when they visit, or have a future date here, because I know that Moncef will take the fantastic care of us. For bread, you get pita bread and a small baguette with scallion butter. I had the Salade Mechouie, which comes with lettuce, couscous, and tuna. It was very fresh and amazing. I also had lentil soup, which was great, but it's difficult to write home about lentil soup. My friend had the corn and crawfish bisque, which she raved about, and the eggplant tomato balsamic salade, whose tomatoes she claimed were the freshest she'd ever had. She didn't speak any French but Moncef realized she spoke Spanish and exchanged a few nuances with her. It's easy to forget about this place because it's not one of the "heavy hitter" New Orleans restaurant names, but that's what gives it it's charm. They don't advertise much, but they don't need to, because a truly stellar place only needs word of mouth, and it's worked for them thus far :) Thank you Moncef!

After reading a nice write-up in the local paper, I went and tried the lamb tagine. It was fairly bland. One olive, one lemon slice and a few potato cubes were the vegetables in the tagine. I was disappointed. The cous-cous though was very good.

Jamila's is epically known worldwide for their excellent food they have been providing the hungry hordes for many years during Jazz Fest. Less well known but even more delicious is what they prepare in their restaurant proper. The Tunisian food here has influences that will bring memories of food from the Middle East and France while producing some remarkably unique and wonderful flavors all its own. The hospitality here is legendary and offered in abundance by the husband and wife team that run this establishment. The husband is frequently found to be sitting at the tables jovially conversing with customers while his wife will occasionally tell him to stop bothering people and, all the while, making it seem very much like you are part of their family as they go into great detail explaining the many wonders they have on offer for your dining delight (along with the best drinks to accompany each selection). This is a truly enjoyable place to dine, drink, enjoy wonderful food, as you experience wonderful hospitality.

Unbelievably good food and wonderfully hospitable service. I would recommend this restaurant. Have a cup of the crawfish zucchini spinach bisque, your taste buds will thank you for your decision.

Moncef and Jamila are the very visible husband and wife team behind Jamila's, and their hospitality and warmth is the main attraction behind their popular little restaurant in the Uptown/Black Pearl neighborhood. But there is more to Jamila's than Moncef's familiar, charming front-of-house demeanor. And that "more" is the food, which is dynamite. While you're making up your mind, Moncef brings you a basket of warm pita triangles and French bread (a neat little symbol for the restaurant's blend of North African and French influences) with a delicious garlic-herb butter. For your appetizer, I highly recommend the brik au thon (~$6), a delicate filo pastry containing chunks of albacore tuna, olives, capers, mashed potatoes, and herbs, served with a tomato-basil chutney. If you want a very light dinner, why not go with soup and salad? Jamila's is the home of the absolutely stunning crawfish, zucchini, and spinach bisque (~$6.50), a creamy and delightful marriage of New Orleans and Mediterranean ingredients joined together with fine French culinary technique. I can also highly recommend the salads, which are refreshing blends of traditional Mediterranean staples. On one visit, I had a special of grilled eggplant salad with feta cheese and a balsamic dressing. On another, I had the Salade Tunisienne, a chopped salad containing cucumbers, apples, bell peppers, olives, capers, tuna, and a lemony dressing. For an entree, definitely stick to the fish of the day, the tagines, and the couscous dishes. The Couscous Au Poisson (~$20) features a generous portion of firm white fish (maybe swordfish? amberjack?) stewed in a richly seasoned, tomoatoey broth containing chunks of zucchini, chickpeas, carrots, and other delectable savories. It was served a generous bowl the warm grain, and a little ramekin of spicy harissa so that you can bring the stew to your desired level of spiciness. A few glasses of wine, a piece of baklava for dessert, and you've got a perfect meal. The decor is nothing to write home about: small, pleasant, unadorned. When the restaurant is busy, the two small dining rooms can get a bit loud, and service begins to slow down, but Moncef is never anything less than friendly and attentive to his tables. There's a reason this place has so many regular customers: It's a real neighborhood spot that even tourists can feel welcome in. The prices are reasonable, and the food is always delicious. Highest possible recommendation.

One of my favorite Middle eastern restaurants. Moncef and Jamila are from Tunisia and opened this little place. I love the inside of the restaurant and booths by the window. Moncef really knows how to treat all the guests very well. Belly dancer on the weekends. Really nice quiet place on weekdays. The tajine lamb is my favorite. And their tirumasu is perfect

I'll start with the disclaimer that my experience is biased. They have VERY limited vegetarian options- like, don't bother going here if you don't eat meat. Our waiter kind of ran off on us and ignored us, even though I was mid-order. We got up and left, but were stopped by Moncef, the owner. He was overly apologetic, and forced us to wait outside while he got the waiter (his son) that abandoned us to apologize to us; which was extremely awkward. Moncef was doing everything in his power to get us to come back in, I gotta say it was just really awkward; going in for handshakes and not letting go while trying to pull me inside is forceful. The guy is incredibly nice- too nice. Partly attributed to culture, I understand. I can honestly say this guy is willing to do absolutely anything he can to make you a happy customer- I just don't think this place and I were a match. My car wasn't unlocking and I was parked right in front, so that made things worse- as I had simply attempted to escape when he went inside to get the waiter. I'll give it four stars, while most in my experience would give it one. I'm not an asshole like that- I know my experience with the place was out of the ordinary. It's a small family run business and it thrives on good word-of-mouth and ratings. I heard and read good things about the place, and if I ate meat I'd probably like it a lot too. I can honestly still recommend it if you're a bloodmouth and you either want to take your family out for dinner, or have a hot date. It's dark and intimate in setting. Slightly cramped since it's very small. Moncef is extremely friendly, cant overstate that enough.

LOVED this place! The owner was warm and welcoming and also gave great advice about ordering. His wife is the chef, but she also came out to greet us. We had a fantastic meal. Can't rave too much about the mussels, the lamb tagine, hose-made merguez sausage and the crawfish/spinach bisque. I have made a (self-imposed) goal of eating at all the top places in New Orleans, and food-wise, this compares to the best. While the surroundings are casual and the prices are reasonable, this really place earns a spot near the top of the Nola food pyramid. You HAVE to try it! I also learned that they will be serving at Jazz Fest in a couple months, so I will have to find them there too. Yum!!

A great dining experience! Very cozy. The owner sat us at our table himself and then his wife-- Jamila came to talk to us. Their hospitality was impressive. They were very attuned to all of our needs from the time we entered until the time that we left. Now time for the food. So savory. I had their seafood bisque as a starter. So good. The entree was delectable. Now, I've never had Tunisian food, but I do believe that I am a new fan. The best part of evening-- tiramisu. Tiramisu happens to be a dessert that I care about very deeply. All of Jamila's desserts are made at the restaurant, so of course, I was curious to try the tiramisu. It's light and fluffy and absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this as a dessert. This is a place that has been open for almost two decades by word of mouth. Try it out! I think you will find an enjoyable experience for yourself. (I hear there are belly dancers on Saturday night!) Our night ended quietly with rosewater with which we cleaned our hands. I will definitely return.

Longing for a Tajine, we headed over to check out the much acclaimed Jamila, on a quiet stretch of Maple Street in the heart of uptown's business district. Quiet in the evening. During the day, the place is probably bustling. The Good: The place is tastefully decorated and intimate. The owner and his wife were extremely nice, accommodating, and caring. (From what I understood, they are Sephardi Jews who immigrated to the US some time ago. They were very nice and experienced--have been working in the restaurant business for years even worked at Emeril's at one point, which means they are able to add French, New Orleans and North African touches to the menu.) They have some pretty decent mint tea on hand in the fine, gold-rimmed, glass cups, and the owner knows how to poor it in a long slender stream, held high above the cup, which was cool. The Bad: I have to admit that after living in that part of the world for a year, I was disappointed with the food. To improve, I would suggest using the real, cone-shaped tajines to give the food the concentrated, wholesome richness one expects when eating food from this part of the world and baking their own bread in true Maghreb style (coarse round loaves) rather than using bagettes and pita bread, which was somewhat of a disappointment as well. It makes a big difference and would be worth baking. The spices were correct, but where are the prunes, dates, and sesame seeds? Without the elements I mentioned above, the overall effect seems a bit watered down, a faint memory of the true flavor of North Africa, and the cuisine a bit too anglocentric and rushed to earn the honor of being named Tunisian? As for price, it was sort of reasonable. A LITTLE on the high side probably. My wife and I split an entree and split an appetizer and drank mint tea, and the check came to $40. One entree and one app? Maybe it's me, but I thought it could have been $10 less. They were so nice that I feel a bit bad pointing these facts out. Mais voila mes suggestions. I hope they are helpful. I feel like the effort was there, but that these little corrections might have improved the experience tenfold. I do understand that they have belly dancing on other nights. Might be the only place in NOLA for that sort of thing, so that is definitely appreciable.

It's difficult to think of anything negative to say about this little neighborhood gem. Jamila's is located on Eastern end of Maple St. and if you're not careful, you'll drive right on past it. I've not found that this restaurant promotes itself very well. I do know that during certain events in the city, such as French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest, they always have a food vendor stand up. Aside from these rare occasions, I believe that the success of Jamila's relies more on word-of-mouth. I can't give you too much history on the restaurant because I know very little but I will pass on what I do know, based on speaking with the owner and his wife. They have had the restaurant up and running for the last 18 years and his wife runs the kitchen. Everything that is brought to your table has been prepared by her and is often delivered by the single waitress or her husband. As for finding the restaurant, I was first made aware of this place by my ex who, at the time, lived nearby. She had been there once previous with her parents and decided to bring me. I really fell for the restaurant because from the exterior, it doesn't look like much but once inside, you suddenly feel like you're at home with the family (depending on your individual case, that can be good or bad for you). For me, this was a good thing. They have two appetizers that you MUST start with: the mussels, which come in a rich, oniony broth and the escargot, which I believe is topped with butter, oil, garlic and parsley. I'm probably forgetting some seasonings and I have no menu to go off of. This is strictly from memory alone. What I do remember is that the starters were amazing! Fresh and hot, the flavors were savory and spot-on; I can't think of a single negative about these dishes. For my entrée, I ordered the Tajine of Lamb. When the dish was brought to me by the husband, I was given a single terra cotta bowl. Two more dishes were given to me; one housed the saffron and almond rice while the other tried to contain the seductive aromas of the potato, onion and lamb. Words simply cannot express how perfectly executed this dish was. I'm not talking about a fine dining course, where every bit of food was pristine and neat and quaint. This was like a home-cooked meal that you wait months and months for. The lamb was so tender (slow cooked, maybe??) that it fell apart at the slightest touch and the flavor was exquisite. It's a safe dish, however but if you're new to this type of cuisine, it's a good place to start. Did I mention that on Saturdays at 8 PM, they have live belly dancing?? Oh yes, they do!! They have an instructor in the art from Loyola University, who dances from 8-10 PM all through the restaurant. You can choose to dance with her or simply enjoy the sights and sounds. Me?? I get up there with her at any opportunity and try to dance a little jig. Next to her, I look like a poor marionette who's strings have gotten tangled....but I do try! It's all in good fun! Do yourself a favor and check this restaurant out. It's so much fun and the food is terrific. For a little more excitement, show up on the weekend around 7 PM and try your hand at matching the belly dancer's hip gyrations! Just get there a little early so you can get a table. This is a small restaurant with a HUGE heart!

Just returned from Jamila's, The only reason you are sitting in this restaurant is because you read about it in Yelp or someone told you about it. I've never seen an advertisement and you surely are not going to pass by while touring the city. We arrived relatively early, about 6:30 Saturday evening. Fair warning, the belly dancer doesn't start until 8:00. Parked in front of the restaurant - that alone is a treat in New Orleans. It was free! I hated to get out of the car. Just to briefly reiterate what others have said - it's very comfortable, homey atmosphere, the food is high quality, the service is friendly and personal. For someone who doesn't even know where Tunisia is (darn that public education), I'm now a fan. I found the spices very interesting. The sausage and egg appetizer was surprisingly spicy, I was forced to put the Tanquery and Tonic to use. The shrimp, mussel, linguine entree was familiar, but with a unique taste. I would like to try the lamb, maybe next time. The chocolate mousse was as good as it gets, very chocolaty and creamy. I tried the Turkish coffee for fun. It was good but I would like to know what that was at the bottom of the cup. Serving size is average. They were breaking in a new waitress, so some aspects of the service (like picking up finished dishes) seemed a little slow. Other than that, service if very good. On their best day, this is going to be a leisurely meal. If you are in a hurry, swing by the Camellia Grill. I read another review mentioning loyal customers. I think there were 4 couples sitting when we arrived. They were apparently all repeats. I find it strange that I would know that. A larger party was arriving as we were leaving, still more regulars. The owner seemed to know everyone. He recognized us as someone new. BTW, this is listed as "dressy" attire. I would say pretty much anything is acceptable - summer casual to tuxedo. Bill for two was $100 even with tip. That includes an appetizer, drinks, entree and desert. I would definitely go back. Cheers!

Very pleasant restaurant. Small, intimate dining room. Very solicitous owner. Had one of the best couscous meal (fish) that I have ever had. Generous slices of fish, fresh vegetables cooked just the right amount, and a tasty broth. It is a little gem of a place off the beaten track, just a short walk from the St. Charles streetcar line. This is a great alternative to standard New Orleans fare. Worth the trip.

What a wonderful find. Our friends in CA who own a home here and live nearby count this as one of their key local favorites. We now know why. The other guests were helpful and friendly. The owner - like those from the Mediterranean, friendly and hospitable. Take his advice as to what to eat. The soup - unique, tasty, a zest of sensations on one's palate. The fish, fresh local, and tasty. Dessert, sweet and wonderful without a lot of sugar. The belly dancer is a bonus. As an artist, she appreciates the attention. For a local place, great food, high value for the meal, hospitality - this could be one of your 3 favorite restaurants on your short list.

This place is just wonderful. Moncef is a gracious and passionate host. He always remembers me even if my visits are years apart. Some of the best menu items are : Brik Au Thon, Lamb Skewers, Crawfish Soup, and the Mousse. You will always feel at home here. While I was there recently, a woman at another table was talking to Moncef and mentioned that she had created a Yelp account just to review Jamila's. That inspired me to do the same.

This is one of my favorite places, so much so that I almost don't want to share it! It's a homey little place, and the owners are adorable and friendly to everyone, insisting that you have a wonderful meal and experience while you are there. jamila's has a warmth and cozy atmosphere coupled with cuisine not found often in Nola as well as traditional French dishes. We enjoyed the mussels, escargot and couscous Royal. While nothing stood out as inspiring the dishes were done well and fit the obtain feel of the place. Good spot for a night you wish to escape and enjoy a solid cozy restaurant on the university area

I absolutely looove this place ! I took myself here after a break up for the first time and I fell so deeply in love with Moncef's restaurant that I decided to take my first date there later on. The brik au crevettes are addictive. The crawfish bisque is the only of its type, but the best bisque i've ever had. Moncef is cordial, affable, and makes the customer service amazing. I will continue to go there by making every excuse possible. The location has a certain romance about it. The lighting is beautiful. The music has authenticity and fuels the atmosphere to be one of the most impressive restaurants I have ever experienced in this city
